TOMATO ONION CHUTNEY

This is an easy to make chutney with basic ingredients. This combination of chutney has a tangy flavour and goes very well with idli, dosa and vada.


Ingredients

1. Onion chopped – 1 medium

2. Tomato chopped – 2

3. Kashmiri Red chilli – 4

4. Urad dal (black gram) – 1tsp

5. Turmeric powder – ¼ tsp

6. Tamarind – small piece

7. Ginger – ½ inch piece

8. Salt

9. Coconut grated (optional) – ¼ cup

10. Oil – 2 tsp


For tempering – Mustard seeds – 1 tsp, urad dal – ½ tsp, red chilli – 2, asatofoetada (hing) – a pinch and curry leaves, oil – 2 tsp


Preparation

1. Heat oil in a pan. Add urad dal and red chilli and sauté on medium flame for few seconds.

2. Add onions, chopped ginger and sauté for a minute.

3. Add tomato. Saute till it is soft and mushy.

4. Add turmeric, tamarind and salt. Mix well and add grated coconut. Mix well and remove from fire.

5. Cool it and blend to a smooth paste.

6. For tempering. Heat oil. Crackle mustard seeds. Add urad dal, red chilli, hing and curry leaves. Saute and pour over the chutney.


Tips

1. Avoid tamarind if tomatoes are tangy and sour.

2. Desiccated coconut can be used in lieu of grated coconut.
