PAZHAM NURUKKU (BANANA JAGGERY SWEET)

Pazham nurukku is a traditional Onam dish made with ripe Kerala plantain and jaggery. It is simply a caramalised plantain bites made with jaggery which is served as a breakfast dish on Thiruvonam day. It is a healthy and tasty snack which is easy to make.


Ingredients

1. Kerala banana (Nenthrapazham) – ½ kg (medium ripe)

2. Jaggery – 200 gm

3. Grated coconut – ½ cup (optional)

4. Ghee – 1 Tbsp

5. Cardamom powder – 1 tsp



Preparation

1. Make syrup of jaggery over flame with ½ cup water. Strain it and keep aside.

2. Steam cook the banana till almost done and remove the skin and cut into 3 or 4 pieces depending on the size.

3. Mix the bananas with jaggery syrup and cook it on medium flame until the bananas are coated with jaggery syrup.

4. Sprinkle grated coconut, ghee and cardamom powder. Mix gently and remove from fire.

Tips

1. Caramalised sugar can be substituted for jaggery.

2. Instead of steam cooking the bananas can be cooked directly in 2 cup water.
