EASY FISH CURRY (KERALA STYLE)

Updated: Jun 28, 2020

This is a traditional spicy fish curry of Kerala. This is my mom's special fish curry recipe which is made almost every day. In this recipe you can use any type of fish . Keralites are crazy about fish. In Kerala people prefer to have sea fish than river fish. This curry goes very well with rice or Appam. It tastes better the next day. Traditionally we make this curry with Cocum.

Ingredients

1. Fish – ½ Kg (Cut to medium size pieces)

2. Ginger (crushed) – 1 Tbsp

3. Garlic (crushed) – 1Tbsp

4. Curry leaves – Few

5. Chilli powder – 1 ½ Tbsp

6. Turmeric powder – ½ tsp

7. Cocum (tamarind) – 2 pieces

8. Fenugreek (Methi) – ½ tsp

9. Mustard – 1 tsp

10. Oil – 1 Tbsp

11. Salt to taste

Instructions

1. Soak the cocum in half cup of water for 30 minutes.

2. Mix chiili powder and turmeric powder with water to make a paste.

3. Heat oil. Add mustard and fenugreek. When it crackles add curry leaves and the above paste. Saute well till oil separates.

4. Add 3 cups of water and the soaked cocum alongwith its water.

5. Bring to boil. Add salt to taste. Add fish pieces. Put some more curry leaves.

6. Place the lid and cook till done .

Tips

1. Don’t stir the vessel instead it may be rotated in between.

2. Tastes better when served at later time.

3. If cocum is not available then tamarind may be used.

4. Cooking in earthern pot gives better taste.

5. Readymade fish masala (2 Tbsp ) can be used instead of chilli powder and turmeric powder mix.
