CHICKEN CURRY (NAADAN KERALA CHICKEN CURRY)


Whenever I make appam I have to make a non veg curry with it. So today I made the good old Naadan Chicken Curry which my mother makes. This is a traditional chicken curry with rich and creamy gravy with a nice flavour of masalas and coconut milk. It goes well with appam, idiyappam, parathas, rice, etc. Prepare and enjoy this delicious dish of chicken curry.




Ingredients

1. Chicken – 500 gms (Cut to medium size pieces)

2. Pepper powder – ½ tsp

3. Vinegar – 1 tsp

4. Salt

5. Coriander powder – 2 Tbsp

6. Turmeric powder – 1 tsp

7. Fennel seeds (saunf) – ½ tsp

8. Garam masala – 1 tsp

9. Shallots (small onions) – 4

10. Garlic chopped – 1tsp

11. Onion medium sliced – 2

12. Ginger garlic crushed – ½ Tbsp

13. Green chilli slit – 4

14. Tomato – 1(medium size)

15. Thin coconut milk – 2 cups

16. Thick coconut milk – ½ cup

For tempering

1. Mustard seeds – 1 tsp

2. Shallots sliced – 4

3. Red chilli - 1

4. Curry leaves

5. Chilli powder-1/2 tsp

6. Turmeric powder-1/4 tsp

7. Oil

Preparation

1. Marinate chicken with ½ tsp pepper powder, 1 tsp coriander powder, ½ tsp turmeric powder, ½ tsp garam masala, 1 tsp of vinegar and salt.

2. Grind ingredients 5 to 10 with little water to a fine paste.

3. Heat oil and add sliced onion. Saute till brown. Add crushed ginger garlic and green chilli. Saute for 2-3 minutes till the raw smell goes. Add ground masala and cook till oil separates. Add sliced tomatoes and mix well.

4. Add the marinated chicken and salt and mix well. Saute for 3-4 minutes and add the thin coconut milk and mix. Bring it to boil.

5. Lower the flame and cook covered till it is done.

6. Mix in the thick coconut milk. Cook for 3-4 mns and remove from fire.

7. In a small pan heat 1 Tbsp oil, and crackle the mustard seeds. Add the sliced shallots, dry red chilli and curry leaves. Fry till the onion turns brown and switch of the flame and add chilli powder and turmeric powder.Mix and add to the chicken curry.

Suggestions

1. Gravy thickens as it rests. So adjust the consistency. Let it rest for some time before serving.

2. You can add potato pieces also along with chicken at step 4.In the traditional recipe we use potatoes .
